This is one of the most common questions we get, usually from someone whose partner dives and who is trying to work out whether a week on a dive boat would be tedious. The honest answer is no — but it depends on the destination and the sites.
## Snorkelling is included
Mask, snorkel and fins come with your package. You are not renting equipment or paying per session.
## Where non-divers do best
Some of the finest sites in both destinations are shallow enough that snorkellers see as much as divers, occasionally more. At Arborek Jetty in Raja Ampat the soft coral grows on the pilings from the surface down, so the interest is concentrated in the top few metres. Melissa’s Garden in the Fam islands is a shallow hard coral plateau. In Komodo, Pink Beach has reef starting metres from shore, and mantas at Karang Makassar are regularly seen from the surface.
## What else fills the week
The boat is not only a dive platform. Padar’s three-bay viewpoint is a land walk. Komodo dragons are a land excursion. There is kayaking, beach time, and the long stretches of the day when divers are on the boat anyway, eating and sleeping. Full-board meals, snacks, soft drinks, coffee, tea and unlimited water are included for everyone, diver or not.
## Which destination suits non-divers better
Komodo, on balance. The land excursions are stronger — dragons and Padar have no equivalent in Raja Ampat — and the season coincides with the driest weather. Raja Ampat rewards snorkellers well, but its appeal is more heavily underwater.
## Mixed groups
On a 12-guest boat, mixed diving and non-diving parties are normal rather than awkward. Tell us the split when you book so the itinerary balances shallow sites and landings rather than optimising purely for depth.

A phinisi is a traditional Indonesian sailing vessel, and the KLM Teman is one. Not a converted dive boat, not a steel motor yacht with sails bolted on — a wooden phinisi handbuilt by Konjo boatbuilders in Tanah Beru, South Sulawesi, and launched in 2017.
## What is a phinisi boat?
Phinisi are two-masted wooden ships, built without formal plans by the Konjo and Bugis shipwrights of South Sulawesi using techniques handed down through generations. The hull goes together plank-first and the frame is fitted afterwards — the reverse of European boatbuilding. UNESCO recognises the art of Sulawesi boatbuilding on its intangible cultural heritage list.
Historically they were cargo traders working the archipelago. Today the same yards build them for charter, which is why a phinisi charter in Indonesia feels different from any other liveaboard: you are on a working piece of maritime tradition rather than a production vessel.
## The KLM Teman
Thirty-six metres, built in wood in 2017 and renovated in 2021. Twelve guests in five ensuite cabins, with a crew of ten and a Cruise Director. That ratio — ten crew to twelve guests — is the practical difference between a phinisi charter and a larger liveaboard carrying twenty or more.
Cabins are ensuite. Meals are full board, cooked aboard. Snorkelling equipment is included, diving is available for certified guests, and there is Starlink Wi-Fi if you need it.
## Why a phinisi rather than a dive boat
Most Indonesian liveaboards are built around the dive deck, and the rest of the vessel is accommodation between dives. A phinisi is built around being aboard. The deck space, the shade, the sailing rig and the timber matter as much as the diving — which is why our guests are as often couples and families as they are divers.
If you do not dive, you lose nothing. Snorkelling in Raja Ampat is exceptional, Komodo has Padar and the dragons, and the boat itself is a large part of the experience.

The most common question we get from non-divers is whether a Raja Ampat snorkeling liveaboard is worth it, or whether the good stuff is all too deep to see. The honest answer: Raja Ampat is one of the few places on earth where snorkellers see almost as much as divers, and at some sites more.
## Why Raja Ampat suits snorkellers
Most of the region’s coral grows shallow. The reefs start within a metre or two of the surface and the water is warm and clear year-round at 27–30°C. Where a diver descends past the coral to look for pelagics, a snorkeller floats directly above the most colourful part of the reef in full daylight — which is also why snorkelling photographs so well here.
## The best snorkelling sites in Raja Ampat

The jetty pilings are covered in soft coral from the surface down, surrounded by dense schools of fish, in calm shallow water. Almost every guest who joins us in Komodo arrives from Bali. It is the obvious route, and it is also where most trips go wrong — people book a flight the same morning the boat leaves. This page covers how to get from Bali to Komodo properly, and what a Komodo liveaboard from Bali actually involves.
## How to get from Bali to Komodo
There is no direct boat from Bali to Komodo National Park on our schedule, and you do not want one — it is a long open crossing that costs two days of diving. The route everyone uses is a short domestic flight.
Denpasar (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) takes roughly ninety minutes, with several services a day in season. Labuan Bajo sits on the western tip of Flores and is the gateway to the park. Every Komodo trip on the KLM Teman starts and finishes there.
## How to get to Komodo island from Bali: the one rule
Fly the day before. Not the morning of departure.

## Trip to Komodo island from Bali: how long you need
Our Komodo itineraries run from 4 days upward. Four days covers the central and northern park — Batu Bolong, Karang Makassar for the mantas, Padar and Pink Beach. Longer trips reach southern Komodo and Horseshoe Bay, where the water is colder and the macro life is extraordinary.
Add a night in Bali either side and a week of annual leave covers it comfortably.
## Komodo national park from Bali: when to go
The Komodo season runs **June to September** — dry weather, calm seas and the most consistent conditions of the year. Outside that window the boat moves to Raja Ampat, which runs November to April from Sorong.
## Getting home
Build a buffer at the end too. Do not book an international flight out of Bali for the same day the boat returns to Labuan Bajo. If the domestic leg slips, you lose the long-haul ticket.

December sits squarely inside the Raja Ampat season, and it is when conditions are at their most settled. It is also when the longer itineraries run, which changes what you can reach.
## Conditions
Water at 27–30°C and stable. A 3mm suit is right for most divers; a shorty works if you do not feel the cold. Surface conditions in December are typically calmer than at the season’s edges, which matters on the longer crossings.
## Why the 10-night trips matter
Seven nights covers the Dampier Strait and the Fam islands. Ten nights reaches Misool in the south — and Misool is a different Raja Ampat. Boo Windows, the swim-through behind the region’s most recognisable underwater photograph, sits there, along with the soft coral walls and gorgonian ridges. If Misool is on your list, itinerary length decides it, not the season.
## Mantas
Reef mantas are at Manta Sandy and Blue Magic through the season. December falls inside the reliable window, though no operator can promise an animal.
## The festive weeks
Late December into early January is the busiest fortnight of the Raja Ampat calendar across the entire fleet, and it books further ahead than anything else. If you want Christmas or New Year on the water, plan a year out rather than a month.
## Early December is the opportunity
The first half of December is quieter than the festive weeks with the same conditions — arguably the best value fortnight of the season. Same reefs, same water, without the holiday premium or the queues at the cleaning stations.
## Non-divers
December suits mixed groups. Arborek Jetty, Melissa’s Garden and the shallow reefs give snorkellers genuinely good water, and the settled conditions make surface time comfortable.

Most guides say the Raja Ampat season runs November to April. Boats start moving in late October, and that fortnight is one of the most underrated windows in Indonesian diving.
## Why early season is worth it
The reefs do not change in a fortnight. What changes is how many people are on them. By December and January the Dampier Strait has boats queuing at Manta Sandy and Cape Kri; in late October you can have a site to yourself. On a 12-guest boat that difference is amplified — small group, empty site.
## Conditions
Water sits at 27–30°C, effectively the same as mid-season, so a 3mm long wetsuit is plenty. Early season can bring more variable weather than the settled middle months, and that is the honest trade-off: slightly less predictable surface conditions in exchange for far fewer boats.
## What you dive
Everything the main season offers. Cape Kri, which holds the record for the most fish species counted on a single dive. Blue Magic for mantas and wobbegongs. Manta Sandy’s cleaning stations. Melissa’s Garden in the Fam islands for the healthiest hard coral in the region. Arborek Jetty, the best snorkelling stop in the strait and the one non-divers remember.
## Who October suits
Divers who have been to Raja Ampat in peak season and did not enjoy sharing it. Photographers who want sites without other divers in frame. And anyone whose annual leave does not line up with Christmas.
## Trip length
Early-season departures tend to run 7 nights, enough to cover the Dampier Strait and the Fam islands properly without the long southern run to Misool.
## Booking
Late October departures are often the last to fill, because most people do not realise the season has started. That works in your favour if your dates are flexible.

A few years ago the answer to this question was simply no. Starlink has changed that, and Indonesian liveaboards now offer real connectivity in places with no mobile signal at all.
## What we offer
Starlink Wi-Fi is available onboard at **10€ per day per person**, with a data cap. It is not included in the package because satellite bandwidth at sea is genuinely expensive and metering it is the only way to keep it working for everyone.
## Why there is a cap
One guest streaming video can consume what twelve guests need for messaging and email. The cap is not a margin exercise; it is what stops a shared connection collapsing. Expect messaging, email, web browsing and social posting to work well. Expect video streaming and large uploads not to.
## Managing expectations
Coverage at sea is good but not flawless. Terrain, heavy weather and the boat’s position all affect it. If you have something genuinely time-critical, do not plan around satellite internet from a moving boat in a remote archipelago.
## Mobile signal
Close to Labuan Bajo or Sorong you will have normal mobile coverage. Once inside Komodo National Park or out in the Dampier Strait, largely not. Southern Komodo and the Banda Sea have effectively none.
## The case for staying offline
Worth saying: a significant number of guests buy the Wi-Fi on day one and stop using it by day three. Somewhere with no signal is increasingly rare, and a week of it is part of what people remember.

Indonesia does not have one dive season. It has several, in different places, and a liveaboard follows them. Understanding which destination is open when is the first decision, before boat or itinerary.
## Komodo National Park
**June to September.** Port: Labuan Bajo (LBJ). Dry season, calm seas, warm water and consistent sunshine. Komodo dragons, strong drift diving, coral gardens and the pink beaches. Water 26–30°C in the north, 24–26°C in the south.
## Raja Ampat, West Papua
**November to April.** Port: Sorong (SOQ). Mantas, the world’s highest recorded reef fish diversity, and the healthiest hard coral in the region. Water 27–30°C, warm and stable.
## Banda Sea and the Ring of Fire
**September to November.** Ports: Ambon (AMQ) and Kaimana (KNG). Schooling fish, whale migrations, coral walls, active volcanoes and cultural landings. Cooler below the thermocline. This is the crossing season, between the two main destinations.
## Alor and Flores
**June to October.** Ports: Labuan Bajo (LBJ), Alor (ARD) and Maumere (MOF).
## Sumbawa
**June to September.** Ports: Sumbawa (SWQ) and Labuan Bajo (LBJ).
## How to choose
If your dates are fixed, the season chooses the destination for you. If your destination is fixed, book inside its window rather than at the edges — shoulder weeks exist but conditions are less reliable. And if you are flexible, the crossings in September to November are the ones experienced divers ask for, because the Banda Sea sees far fewer boats than either Komodo or Raja Ampat.

**Content:**
Every Komodo trip on the Teman starts and ends at Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores. The airport code is **LBJ**.
## Getting there
Labuan Bajo is a domestic connection. Most guests route through Jakarta or Bali, and Bali is usually the easier of the two — the hop to Labuan Bajo is short and there are several services a day in season.
## Arrive the day before. Always.
This is the single piece of advice we repeat most. Domestic Indonesian flights are subject to weather and mechanical delays, and Labuan Bajo in particular can be affected by cloud. A boat cannot wait: the itinerary is built around tides, and departure is not flexible. Arriving the previous day converts a potential disaster into a mild inconvenience.
## The night before
Labuan Bajo has grown considerably and there is plenty of accommodation across price levels. It is a small enough town to walk, the harbour is the centre of everything, and the sunsets over the bay are genuinely worth the early arrival on their own.
## Baggage and gear
Domestic allowances are tighter than international ones, and dive gear is heavy. Check your allowance on the domestic leg specifically rather than assuming your international ticket carries through, and consider whether you need to bring everything — rental equipment is available onboard.
## Going home
Build a buffer at the end too. Do not book an international flight out of Jakarta or Bali for the same day the boat returns. If the domestic leg slips, you lose the long-haul ticket.

Raja Ampat liveaboards run **November to April**, departing and returning to Sorong (airport code SOQ). This is the counterpart to the Komodo season, and it is why a single boat can offer both.
## Conditions
Water sits between 27 and 30°C and stays that way effectively year-round, which makes Raja Ampat the warmer and gentler of the two destinations. A 3mm long suit is plenty, and divers who do not feel the cold get away with a shorty. That consistency is part of the appeal: there is no cold-water surprise like southern Komodo.
## What the season delivers
Raja Ampat is the most biodiverse reef system on earth, and the numbers come from here — Cape Kri in the Dampier Strait holds the record for the most fish species counted on a single dive. Mantas visit Manta Sandy and Blue Magic through the season. The Fam islands hold some of the healthiest hard coral anywhere, and Misool in the south offers the swim-throughs at Boo Windows.
## Getting to Sorong
Sorong is reached via a domestic connection, usually through Jakarta or Makassar. It is not a short journey and flights are not frequent, so build in a buffer day rather than connecting tight — a missed connection on the day of departure means a missed boat.
## North versus south
Shorter itineraries stay around the Dampier Strait and the Fam islands, which is where the marquee sites sit. Misool is a long way south, so Boo Windows and the southern reefs appear only on longer trips. If Misool matters to you, check the itinerary length before booking.
## Outside November to April
From June to September the Teman is in Komodo. Between seasons we also run Banda Sea and Ring of Fire crossings.

Komodo liveaboards run **June to September**, departing and returning to Labuan Bajo (airport code LBJ). That window is not arbitrary — it is the dry season, when seas are calmest and conditions most consistent.
## What the season gives you
Dry weather, calm crossings, warm water and reliable sunshine. Water in central and northern Komodo sits around 26–30°C, comfortable in a 3mm suit. Visibility is generally at its best, which matters on sites like Crystal Rock where the appeal is coral colour in natural light.
## The southern exception
Southern Komodo behaves differently. Horseshoe Bay, home to Cannibal Rock and Yellow Wall, is fed by cold upwellings and runs 24–26°C. If your trip reaches the south, plan warmer exposure protection than the north requires — a 5mm, or a hood if you feel the cold. Reaching Horseshoe Bay costs cruising time, so it appears on longer itineraries.
## Mantas
Reef mantas are present through the season at Karang Makassar and the Cauldron. Numbers vary, and no operator can promise them, but the channel is a feeding and cleaning lane rather than an occasional sighting.
## Outside June to September
We move the boat. From November to April the Teman is in Raja Ampat, which has its own season and its own diving. If your dates fall outside the Komodo window, Raja Ampat is usually the answer rather than a compromise.
## Booking timing
Komodo is the busier of our two main seasons, and cabins on a 12-guest boat are limited by definition. Earlier is better, particularly for the shorter 4 and 5-day trips which fill first.

The short answer: Advanced Open Water, or an equivalent such as CMAS 2-Star, is the level we ask for. But Open Water divers are not turned away, and it is worth understanding why the distinction matters more in Komodo than in most places.
## Why Komodo raises the bar
Komodo’s best sites are current sites. Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and The Shotgun all depend on moving water, and that water does not negotiate. The certification level is really a proxy for two things: comfort being moved by something stronger than you are, and buoyancy control good enough that you are not fighting your own position while you do it.
## If you hold Advanced Open Water
You may dive to 30 metres, in line with your certification. Divers with a deep specialty can go further, but only with the agreement of both the guide and the Cruise Director — that is not a formality, it depends on the site and the day.
## If you hold Open Water only
You are welcome aboard, with two conditions. Your maximum depth is 18 metres, which is a legal and insurance limit rather than a house rule. And you will be supervised throughout. In practice this is less restrictive than it sounds: a great deal of Komodo’s best diving, including the manta channel at Karang Makassar, sits well within 18 metres.
## Logged dives matter more than the card
We recommend around 30 logged dives in open water. A diver with an Advanced card and eight dives is usually less ready for Komodo than an Open Water diver with sixty. Recent experience counts too — if it has been three years, say so when you book rather than on day one.
## Everyone does a check dive
Day one includes a check dive for every guest regardless of certification, usually somewhere sheltered like Sebayur Kecil. It is not a test to pass. It lets the dive team see your buoyancy and weighting, and it decides how quickly the week builds toward the harder sites. Briefings are mandatory before every dive.
## What to do if you are unsure
Tell us your certification level, your total logged dives and when you last dived. We would rather plan the week around your actual experience than discover the gap in a current.

Boo Windows sits in Misool, in southern Raja Ampat, and it is the single most recognisable underwater image from the region. A coral ridge is pierced by two openings, and when a diver passes through with light behind them the effect gives the site its name.
## Getting the shot
The windows are shallow enough that natural light does the work, but the timing is unforgiving: the sun has to be positioned to backlight the opening, and only one diver fits at a time. Groups that queue and take turns come away with the image; groups that crowd it do not.
## Beyond the windows
The ridge either side is thick with soft coral, gorgonians and schooling fish, and the site is worth diving on its own merits rather than for one photograph. Reef sharks and sweetlips are common, and current can pick up along the ends of the ridge.
## Getting there
Misool is a long way south of the Dampier Strait, so Boo Windows appears only on longer Raja Ampat itineraries.

Arborek is a small village on an island in the Dampier Strait, and its jetty has become one of the most photographed places in Raja Ampat. The pilings are covered in soft coral and surrounded by fish, and the whole thing sits in water shallow enough to snorkel comfortably.
## Why it suits non-divers
Guests who do not dive often have the best hour of their trip here. The coral starts at the surface, the water is calm and clear, and schools of fish move constantly between the pilings. It is also a rare stop where snorkellers see more than divers, because the interest is concentrated in the top few metres.
## The village matters
Arborek is a working community that has chosen tourism and marine conservation over destructive fishing. Visits support that directly. Guests can walk the village, and locally made handicrafts are sold on the island.
## What you see
Soft coral on the pilings, dense schools of fusiliers and batfish, mantas passing on occasion, and good macro life around the structure.

Melissa’s Garden in the Fam islands is the site divers use as a reference point for what healthy hard coral looks like. It is shallow, bright and structurally intricate, and it is frequently described as the finest hard coral garden in Raja Ampat.
## Why it stands out
Much of the world’s hard coral has thinned or bleached. Melissa’s Garden has not. Table corals, staghorn and plate formations grow in overlapping layers across a shallow plateau, which means colour holds without artificial light and photographers can work at safe depth for long periods.
## What you see
The coral itself is the subject. Around it: anthias in clouds, wrasse, damselfish, sweetlips, blacktip reef sharks in the shallows, and occasional turtles. Current is usually mild.
## Experience level
Suitable for all certified divers and excellent for snorkellers, given how shallow the best coral sits.

**Content:**
Manta Sandy is a shallow sandy channel with coral bommies that function as cleaning stations. Reef mantas arrive to be cleaned, and the dive consists almost entirely of staying still and waiting.
## The rule that makes the dive work
Divers settle behind a marked line of rocks and stay behind it. Nobody swims out toward the animals. This is not only etiquette but the practical reason encounters happen at all: mantas approach a stationary group and leave a moving one. Groups that hold the line often have animals pass within a metre overhead.
## What you see
Reef mantas, sometimes several at once, queuing at the cleaning stations. Between arrivals the sand holds garden eels, blue-spotted rays and macro subjects worth the wait.
## Experience level
Shallow and undemanding. Suitable for most certified divers, provided they can hold position without stirring up sand.

Blue Magic is a submerged seamount in the Dampier Strait with nothing visible from the surface. It is one of the few Raja Ampat sites where divers regularly see both manta rays and wobbegong sharks on the same dive.
## Current is the attraction
The seamount interrupts the flow through the strait, which concentrates plankton and draws in feeding animals. On a strong tide the site is busy; on a slack tide it can be unremarkable. Timing decides what the dive becomes.
## What you see
Reef mantas circling the top of the seamount, wobbegong sharks resting under ledges, schooling fusiliers and trevally, and occasional oceanic mantas passing through. Macro life on the seamount itself rewards divers who look closely between the big animals.
## Experience level
Advanced recommended, given the exposed position and current.

Cape Kri is the site that made Raja Ampat famous among biologists rather than photographers. Diving the ridge off Kri island in the Dampier Strait, Dr Gerald Allen recorded the highest number of fish species ever counted on a single dive. That figure is the reason Raja Ampat is routinely described as the most biodiverse reef system on earth.
## Why the numbers are so high
The Dampier Strait funnels water between larger landmasses, and Cape Kri sits on a ridge directly in that flow. Nutrient-rich current arriving constantly supports an unusual range of habitats within a single dive profile, from shallow coral garden to deeper sloping wall.
## What you see
Dense schools of trevally, batfish and barracuda, reef sharks patrolling the slope, sweetlips and snapper stacked along the ridge, and turtles on the shallower coral. The impression most divers describe is not one particular animal but the sheer volume of fish in every direction.
## Experience level
Current is significant and variable. Advanced experience, or a guided dive with good buoyancy, is recommended.

Pink Beach, or Pantai Merah, is one of a small number of beaches worldwide with genuinely pink sand. The colour is not a trick of the light or a filter.
## Where the colour comes from
Fragments of red organ-pipe coral break down and mix with white coral sand. The blend reads as pink, and it intensifies where waves concentrate the red fragments at the waterline. Wet sand looks far pinker than dry sand, which is why photographs taken at the edge of the water look so different from those taken further up the beach.
## Snorkelling straight off the beach
The reef starts close to shore, which makes this one of the easiest snorkelling stops in the park. Coral cover is good in the shallows and the fish life is dense enough that guests often stay in longer than planned.
## A dive site too
Beyond the shallow reef the slope continues down and is dived on some itineraries, with good macro life and gentle conditions.
## Conditions
Water temperature in central and north Komodo runs 26–30°C, generally warm and calm. A 3mm long wetsuit is the most versatile choice; bring a 5mm or a neoprene hoodie if you feel the cold. Padar is the image most people have seen before they ever book Komodo: three curved bays meeting beneath a ridge, each with a different shade of sand. The photograph is taken from a marked trail that climbs the spine of the island.
## Timing is everything
The hike is short but exposed, with almost no shade, and the difference between doing it at sunrise and doing it at midday is substantial. Boats arriving early get the light, the cooler air and a far emptier ridge. By late morning the trail is busy and the heat is punishing.
## What to bring
Proper footwear rather than flip-flops, water, and a hat. The steps are uneven and loose in places.
## Not a dive site
Padar is a land stop, which is worth saying plainly because it appears on both diving and leisure itineraries. Guests who came only to dive sometimes skip it; most regret that.
## Conditions

Yellow Wall of Texas, usually shortened to Yellow Wall, is the other signature dive of Horseshoe Bay in southern Komodo. It is a steep wall covered so completely in yellow and orange soft coral that bare rock is hard to find.
## Cold water, dense life
Like Cannibal Rock nearby, Yellow Wall benefits from cold nutrient-rich upwelling. The trade-off is temperature and sometimes visibility; the reward is invertebrate density that photographers travel specifically for.
## What you see
Sea apples in numbers, crinoids, frogfish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and abundant shrimp and crab species living in the soft coral. Torches are useful even in daylight to bring the colour out.
## Practical note
Plan warmer exposure protection than the northern sites require, and expect this dive only on longer Komodo itineraries.
## Experience level
Experienced divers with good buoyancy, since the wall is fragile and the best subjects are small.
## Conditions
South Komodo is measurably colder than the north: 24–26°C, caused by deep upwellings that also drive strong currents. That cold water is exactly why the invertebrate life here is so rich. A 3mm suit is not enough for most divers on repeat dives — bring a 5mm, and a neoprene hoodie if you feel the cold. Season is June to September from Labuan Bajo. **Content:**
Cannibal Rock sits in Horseshoe Bay off Rinca, in the southern reaches of Komodo National Park, and it bears almost no resemblance to the diving in the north. The water is markedly colder, the visibility is often lower, and the appeal is entirely in the detail rather than the big animals.
## Why south Komodo is different
Cold upwellings from the Indian Ocean feed this side of the park. That water suppresses temperature and loads the system with nutrients, which produces extraordinary invertebrate growth and a macro community you will not see in the northern channels. Divers who prefer critters over sharks ask for the south specifically.
## What you see
Dense soft coral and sea apples, frogfish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, zebra crabs on fire urchins, and unusually rich sponge growth. The rock itself is smothered in life from the shallows down.
## Practical note
Because of the temperature difference, exposure protection suitable for the north is often not enough here. Southern Komodo also appears only on longer itineraries, since reaching Horseshoe Bay costs cruising time.
## Experience level
Comfortable, experienced divers. Conditions can be surgy.

## Why it comes first
Conditions are mild, the reef starts shallow, and there is enough to look at that a check dive does not feel like a formality. It gives the dive team a chance to assess the group before committing anyone to the current-driven sites further north.

Siaba Besar is a sheltered bay in central Komodo used as much for its calm as for its marine life. It is a frequent choice for the first dive of a trip, when guests are reassembling gear and getting used to the water again.
## A check dive worth doing
Protected from the main channel currents, Siaba offers a gentle sandy slope and coral bommies at easy depth. The lack of current makes it useful for buoyancy checks, camera setup and weight adjustment before the harder northern sites.
## What you see
Green turtles in unusual numbers, often several on a single dive, resting on the sand or grazing. Garden eels, cuttlefish, batfish and a healthy population of reef fish. Macro subjects reward slow divers.
## Experience level
Suitable for all certified divers, including recently qualified ones, and good for snorkellers.
## Conditions

Tatawa Besar is the site divers name when asked which Komodo dive was the most relaxing. It is a gentle slope carpeted in orange soft coral, dived as an easy drift, and it sits close enough to Batu Bolong that the two often run on the same day as a deliberate contrast.
## Why it suits everyone
Where the northern pinnacles demand hooks and technique, Tatawa asks almost nothing. Divers drop in and travel slowly along the slope with a mild current. It is a common choice after a demanding morning dive, and a good site for less experienced guests on a mixed-ability group.
## What you see
Vast fields of orange soft coral, turtles feeding on the slope, schooling fusiliers, nudibranchs for anyone looking closely, and the occasional reef shark passing along the deeper edge.
## Experience level
Open Water divers are generally comfortable here.

**Content:**
The Shotgun, also called the Cauldron, lies between Gili Lawa Laut and Gili Lawa Darat. It is the most talked-about dive in Komodo, and the one most dependent on getting the timing right.
## Why it is called the Shotgun
Current accelerates through a narrow gap between the islands and fires divers out across a sandy bowl. Done on the correct tide, it is a controlled and exhilarating ride. Done on the wrong tide, it is simply a current dive with none of the effect, which is why the site is entirely dependent on the cruise director reading the water.
## What you see
Mantas frequently feed in the bowl where the flow slows and plankton collects. Reef sharks hold along the edges, and large schools of fish stack up at the mouth of the gap. The sand bowl also gives divers somewhere to settle and watch rather than being swept onward.
## Experience level
Advanced. Divers need to be relaxed about being moved by water they cannot resist and disciplined about staying with the group through the acceleration.

Golden Passage is the narrow channel separating Komodo island from Gili Lawa Darat. Tidal water is forced through a tight gap, which makes it one of the fastest and most enjoyable drift dives in the park.
## A pure drift
There is no working against this current and no reason to try. Divers drop in, get neutral and travel, watching the reef move past. Because the water is moving hard, the coral is healthy and the fish life is constant rather than concentrated in one spot.
## What you see
Reef sharks cruising the channel floor, schooling fusiliers and surgeonfish, trevally, turtles resting in the lee of bommies, and occasional eagle rays crossing the passage. The topography itself, with walls on both sides, is a large part of the appeal.
## Experience level
Comfortable drift experience needed. Buoyancy matters more than fitness here, since the current does the work.

**Content:**
Karang Makassar, known to most divers simply as Manta Point, is a long shallow channel of coral rubble between Komodo and Tatawa. It is not a dramatic wall or pinnacle. It is a manta highway, and it is the reason many guests book Komodo in the first place.
## Why the mantas are here
The channel functions as both a cleaning station and a feeding lane. Reef mantas arrive to have parasites removed by cleaner wrasse and to feed in the plankton the current carries through. Encounters are common year-round, with seasonal variation in numbers.
## How the dive works
This is a gentle-to-moderate drift over shallow rubble. Divers settle low, stay still and wait rather than swimming toward the animals. Chasing a manta ends the encounter; holding position often brings them within a metre or two overhead.
## Experience level
Suitable for most certified divers, and one of the few marquee Komodo sites that is not current-dependent in the way the northern pinnacles are. Snorkellers frequently see mantas here too.

**Content:**
Crystal Rock sits close to Castle Rock in northern Komodo and the two are often dived on the same morning. The difference is visible from the boat: Crystal Rock breaks the surface, and its shallower profile means far more light reaching the coral.
## Why it photographs well
The hard coral cover on the upper slopes is among the healthiest in the park, and because the top of the pinnacle sits shallow, colours hold up without artificial light. Visibility here is frequently the best of any northern site.
## Current and technique
Like its neighbour, Crystal Rock is a current dive. The flow splits around the pinnacle, creating a calm pocket downstream where divers gather before working the edges. Reef sharks, trevally and large schools of fusiliers use the same structure.
## Experience level
Advanced recommended. Divers comfortable at Crystal Rock are usually ready for Castle Rock.

Castle Rock is a submerged seamount off the northern tip of Komodo, near Gili Lawa Laut. Nothing breaks the surface, so first-timers are often unimpressed until they descend and find themselves in one of the busiest pieces of water in the national park.
## A hook-in dive
Current is the whole point here. Divers typically descend fast, get into the lee of the seamount and hook in, then watch. Fighting the flow is pointless and exhausting; the technique is to anchor yourself and let the reef come to you. A reef hook and solid buoyancy are essential.
## What you see
Large schools of trevally and jacks stack up on the current-facing side, with grey reef and white-tip sharks holding station below them. Fusiliers and surgeonfish move in dense clouds. At dawn and dusk the predators switch on and the hunting activity is the reason experienced divers ask for this site specifically.
## Experience level
Advanced, with genuine current experience. This is not a site to learn hooking technique on.

Batu Bolong is the dive most people remember from a Komodo trip. It is a single pinnacle in the channel between Komodo island and Tatawa, and only its tip breaks the surface. Everything that makes it extraordinary is underwater: the rock drops away as a near-vertical wall of hard and soft coral, and because the current splits around it, the sheltered face becomes a feeding station for an unusual density of fish.
## Why Batu Bolong is dived on one side only
The channel funnels water past the pinnacle with real force. That current is what feeds the reef and keeps the coral in the condition it is in, but it also means the site is only dived on the lee side, and the safe side changes with the tide. Anchoring is not permitted here, so boats hold position and divers enter and exit directly.
This is why Batu Bolong is not a beginner dive. Divers need reliable buoyancy, a controlled descent, and the discipline to stay in the lee of the rock rather than drifting around the edge into the full flow.
## What you see
The wall is thick with reef fish, and schooling surgeonfish and fusiliers gather in numbers that surprise even experienced divers. White-tip and grey reef sharks patrol the deeper section, giant trevally hunt along the drop, and turtles are common on the shallower shelf. The coral cover itself is the other attraction, and it is in better shape than most sites in the park.
## Experience level
Advanced certification or equivalent logged experience in current is strongly recommended. If Komodo is your first liveaboard, we will usually build up to Batu Bolong across the first days of the trip rather than diving it on day one.
## Conditions
Water temperature in central and north Komodo runs 26–30°C, generally warm and calm. A 3mm long wetsuit is the most versatile choice; bring a 5mm or a neoprene hoodie if you feel the cold. The Komodo season is June to September, departing from Labuan Bajo. Open Water divers are limited to a maximum depth of 18m by law and insurance.

Mais entre le choix de la saison, le niveau de plongée requis et la question du budget réel, il est facile de s'y perdre. Ce guide répond aux questions que l'on nous pose le plus souvent avant une croisière plongée à Komodo.
## Quand partir plonger à Komodo ?
La saison de plongée à Komodo s'étend de **juin à septembre**, avec une eau entre 22 et 27°C selon les mois et les sites. C'est la période où les courants — essentiels pour attirer la vie marine dans le détroit — sont les plus favorables, et où l'on croise le plus régulièrement les raies manta sur les stations de nettoyage.
En dehors de cette fenêtre, Komodo reste plongeable, mais avec une eau plus fraîche et des conditions de courant plus variables. Si votre objectif principal est les mantas et les gros pélagiques, viser juin-septembre reste le choix le plus sûr.
## Quel niveau de plongée pour une croisière à Komodo ?
C'est la question qui revient le plus souvent, et la réponse honnête est : **ça dépend du site, pas de la croisière**.
Komodo National Park regroupe des sites très différents :
