Sebayur Kecil lies near the entrance to Komodo National Park, which makes it the natural first stop on a trip leaving Labuan Bajo. Most guests do their opening dive here.
Why it comes first
Conditions are mild, the reef starts shallow, and there is enough to look at that a check dive does not feel like a formality. It gives the dive team a chance to assess the group before committing anyone to the current-driven sites further north.
What you see
A sloping coral reef with good hard and soft coral cover, anemones and clownfish, sweetlips, and a strong macro population including nudibranchs and shrimp. Turtles pass through regularly.
Experience level
All levels, and a good snorkelling stop.
Conditions
Water temperature in central and north Komodo runs 26–30°C, generally warm and calm. A 3mm long wetsuit is the most versatile choice; bring a 5mm or a neoprene hoodie if you feel the cold. The Komodo season is June to September, departing from Labuan Bajo. Open Water divers are limited to a maximum depth of 18m by law and insurance.
