Is a Komodo Liveaboard Trip Safe For Families and Kids?

Raja Ampat liveaboards run November to April, departing and returning to Sorong (airport code SOQ). This is the counterpart to the Komodo season, and it is why a single boat can offer both.

Conditions

Water sits between 27 and 30°C and stays that way effectively year-round, which makes Raja Ampat the warmer and gentler of the two destinations. A 3mm long suit is plenty, and divers who do not feel the cold get away with a shorty. That consistency is part of the appeal: there is no cold-water surprise like southern Komodo.

What the season delivers

Raja Ampat is the most biodiverse reef system on earth, and the numbers come from here — Cape Kri in the Dampier Strait holds the record for the most fish species counted on a single dive. Mantas visit Manta Sandy and Blue Magic through the season. The Fam islands hold some of the healthiest hard coral anywhere, and Misool in the south offers the swim-throughs at Boo Windows.

Getting to Sorong

Sorong is reached via a domestic connection, usually through Jakarta or Makassar. It is not a short journey and flights are not frequent, so build in a buffer day rather than connecting tight — a missed connection on the day of departure means a missed boat.

North versus south

Shorter itineraries stay around the Dampier Strait and the Fam islands, which is where the marquee sites sit. Misool is a long way south, so Boo Windows and the southern reefs appear only on longer trips. If Misool matters to you, check the itinerary length before booking.

Outside November to April

From June to September the Teman is in Komodo. Between seasons we also run Banda Sea and Ring of Fire crossings.
