Blue Magic, Raja Ampat: Seamount Diving in Dampier Strait

Blue Magic is a submerged seamount in the Dampier Strait with nothing visible from the surface. It is one of the few Raja Ampat sites where divers regularly see both manta rays and wobbegong sharks on the same dive.

Current is the attraction

The seamount interrupts the flow through the strait, which concentrates plankton and draws in feeding animals. On a strong tide the site is busy; on a slack tide it can be unremarkable. Timing decides what the dive becomes.

What you see

Reef mantas circling the top of the seamount, wobbegong sharks resting under ledges, schooling fusiliers and trevally, and occasional oceanic mantas passing through. Macro life on the seamount itself rewards divers who look closely between the big animals.

Advanced recommended, given the exposed position and current.

Conditions

Raja Ampat sits at 27–30°C, warm and pleasant year-round — a 3mm long wetsuit suits most divers, and shorties work for those who do not feel the cold. The Raja Ampat season runs November to April. Open Water divers are limited to a maximum depth of 18m by law and insurance.
