Is a Komodo Liveaboard Trip Safe For Families and Kids?

Golden Passage is the narrow channel separating Komodo island from Gili Lawa Darat. Tidal water is forced through a tight gap, which makes it one of the fastest and most enjoyable drift dives in the park.

A pure drift

There is no working against this current and no reason to try. Divers drop in, get neutral and travel, watching the reef move past. Because the water is moving hard, the coral is healthy and the fish life is constant rather than concentrated in one spot.

What you see

Reef sharks cruising the channel floor, schooling fusiliers and surgeonfish, trevally, turtles resting in the lee of bommies, and occasional eagle rays crossing the passage. The topography itself, with walls on both sides, is a large part of the appeal.

Experience level

Comfortable drift experience needed. Buoyancy matters more than fitness here, since the current does the work.

Conditions

Water temperature in central and north Komodo runs 26–30°C, generally warm and calm. A 3mm long wetsuit is the most versatile choice; bring a 5mm or a neoprene hoodie if you feel the cold. The Komodo season is June to September, departing from Labuan Bajo. Open Water divers are limited to a maximum depth of 18m by law and insurance.
