Is a Komodo Liveaboard Trip Safe For Families and Kids?

Every Komodo trip on the Teman starts and ends at Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores. The airport code is LBJ.

Getting there

Labuan Bajo is a domestic connection. Most guests route through Jakarta or Bali, and Bali is usually the easier of the two — the hop to Labuan Bajo is short and there are several services a day in season.

Arrive the day before. Always.

This is the single piece of advice we repeat most. Domestic Indonesian flights are subject to weather and mechanical delays, and Labuan Bajo in particular can be affected by cloud. A boat cannot wait: the itinerary is built around tides, and departure is not flexible. Arriving the previous day converts a potential disaster into a mild inconvenience.

The night before

Labuan Bajo has grown considerably and there is plenty of accommodation across price levels. It is a small enough town to walk, the harbour is the centre of everything, and the sunsets over the bay are genuinely worth the early arrival on their own.

Baggage and gear

Domestic allowances are tighter than international ones, and dive gear is heavy. Check your allowance on the domestic leg specifically rather than assuming your international ticket carries through, and consider whether you need to bring everything — rental equipment is available onboard.

Going home

Build a buffer at the end too. Do not book an international flight out of Jakarta or Bali for the same day the boat returns. If the domestic leg slips, you lose the long-haul ticket.
