Manta Sandy, Raja Ampat: How to Watch Mantas Properly

Manta Sandy is a shallow sandy channel with coral bommies that function as cleaning stations. Reef mantas arrive to be cleaned, and the dive consists almost entirely of staying still and waiting.

The rule that makes the dive work

Divers settle behind a marked line of rocks and stay behind it. Nobody swims out toward the animals. This is not only etiquette but the practical reason encounters happen at all: mantas approach a stationary group and leave a moving one. Groups that hold the line often have animals pass within a metre overhead.

What you see

Reef mantas, sometimes several at once, queuing at the cleaning stations. Between arrivals the sand holds garden eels, blue-spotted rays and macro subjects worth the wait.

Experience level

Shallow and undemanding. Suitable for most certified divers, provided they can hold position without stirring up sand.

Conditions

Raja Ampat sits at 27–30°C, warm and pleasant year-round — a 3mm long wetsuit suits most divers, and shorties work for those who do not feel the cold. The Raja Ampat season runs November to April. Open Water divers are limited to a maximum depth of 18m by law and insurance.
