Siaba Besar, Komodo: Turtles and Easy Diving

Siaba Besar is a sheltered bay in central Komodo used as much for its calm as for its marine life. It is a frequent choice for the first dive of a trip, when guests are reassembling gear and getting used to the water again.

A check dive worth doing

Protected from the main channel currents, Siaba offers a gentle sandy slope and coral bommies at easy depth. The lack of current makes it useful for buoyancy checks, camera setup and weight adjustment before the harder northern sites.

What you see

Green turtles in unusual numbers, often several on a single dive, resting on the sand or grazing. Garden eels, cuttlefish, batfish and a healthy population of reef fish. Macro subjects reward slow divers.

Experience level

Suitable for all certified divers, including recently qualified ones, and good for snorkellers.

Conditions

Water temperature in central and north Komodo runs 26–30°C, generally warm and calm. A 3mm long wetsuit is the most versatile choice; bring a 5mm or a neoprene hoodie if you feel the cold. The Komodo season is June to September, departing from Labuan Bajo. Open Water divers are limited to a maximum depth of 18m by law and insurance.

The boat works Komodo National Park from June to September out of Labuan Bajo, Raja Ampat from November to April out of Sorong, and runs Banda Sea and Ring of Fire crossings between the two seasons.
